In The Tribe, a group of Jewish men imprisoned in the Belzec death camp mysteriously survive the Holocaust unharmed several decades later, when the rabbi’s son is murdered in a random act of gang violence, the teenage gang involved are found brutally murdered, nothing left behind but clay. ![]() However, like any emerging cultural narrative, there were counterarguments aplenty if you knew where to look – one such place was Bari Wood’s largely forgotten 1981 novel The Tribe. ![]() For every narrative like The Pawnbroker, there are a dozen more like The Tattooist of Auschwitz – maudlin tearjerkers designed more with their audiences in mind than their subjects. In art this takes shape as overly sentimental dramatisations of Jewish trauma that focus more on Gentile saviours, and refuses to engage with trauma’s problematic tensions, eradicating conflict but with it any meaningful attempt at empathy and understanding. ![]() Since the Holocaust, Gentile media has propagated a very specific idea of the prototypical Holocaust survivor – as the victim par excellence of the Western subconscious, Jewish survivors frequently get stereotyped as gentle and passive, fuelling the dangerous lie that Jews did little to resist their own genocide. ![]() 6/9/2023 0 Comments Ruckus by L.J. In terms of the real best on offer here, there’s a great opener from John Smith, ‘Meatmonger’, that’s something of an extreme body horror affair with Dredd spirited off-world to a traveling meat-loving alien ship. Now, having said that, both Smith and Rennie contribute a couple of great stories, but it’s definitely another volume dominated, as Dredd really was for decades, by just one writer. And frankly, it’s these shorter strips, over the years, that have really made up the real meat of Judge Dredd and Mega-City One.Īlthough there’s four writers listed for this volume, it really is a John Wagner thing, with John Smith and Alan Grant contributing one storyline each, and Gordon Rennie giving us three. ![]() ![]() It’s another Judge Dredd Case Files without any kind of Dredd epic, but that’s just the way it works out sometimes. ![]() 6/8/2023 0 Comments Addicted for now series![]() ![]() Strangers and family begin to infiltrate their guarded lives, and with new challenges, they realize they may not just be addicted to alcohol and sex. You are capable, and smart, so you can be wealthy if you get your mind out of the trash can with how bad life is, and all the if-only’s.īelieve you are worthy, ask the universe for the money, trust it with all of your soul and wait for it to deliver, so long as you work for it. If you don’t have money, it’s because you are blocking the money due to fear–whether that fear is a result of success, or of a fear of not having enough or being able to make enough money for what you want to achieve–you need to shift your mindset into abundance. ![]() Wealth is an energy, and the universe works through energetic means. ![]() What if being wealthy did not necessarily mean bad, but rather, it meant a higher standard of living? ![]() What if…all you had to do was ask the universe out there, put your intentions out to being known and believe with all your soul that the money that you desire–the wealth that you want–is all on its way? With the colony’s remaining men in town arranging bail, eight women – among them, Ona, pregnant with her rapist’s child, and teenager Neitje, whose mother has committed suicide – meet in a hayloft to decide what to do next. Toews’s fictional response begins after the attackers’ arrest. But it is based on real events in a Mennonite community in Bolivia, in the mid-late 00s, where girls and women were repeatedly drugged and raped in their sleep, purportedly by demons but actually by local men, later jailed. A chilling tale of systematic subjugation in a rural religious colony, Miriam Toews’s new novel sounds like another addition to the current wave of feminist dystopias that have emerged post-Trump. ![]() |
